By: Tara Conlan Shows such as EastEnders and Coronation Street are to be monitored for diversity following the launch of a new system that measures the ethnic, gender and sexual orientation makeup of British television. The BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky are taking part in Project Diamond, which will gather data about the background of those working on all UK programmes. All key staff, from actors to sound technicians, will be asked about their gender, ethnicity, disability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity via a confidential, encrypted computer system.

By: Aaron C. Davis RICHMOND, Calif. -- The odds were good that Lonnie Holmes, 21, would be the next person to kill or be killed in this working-class suburb north of San Francisco. Four of his cousins had died in shootings. He was a passenger in a car involved in a drive-by shooting, police said. And he was arrested for carrying a loaded gun. But when Holmes was released from prison last year, officials in this city offered something unusual to try to keep him alive: money. They began paying Holmes as much as $1,000 a month not to commit another gun crime. The move was done in the interests of having a "broad and balanced curriculum," according to UPI. The remarkable decision was part of a document published on June 9th that laid outnew clauses for church academies and stated that creationism is not widely accepted as a scientific theory. Steven Rose is owner of Bailey’s Pizza—a small, down-home restaurant in Searcy, Arkansas. The pizza parlor offers customers an old-fashioned ambiance, something Rose describes as an “old school country atmosphere.” Rose, a Christian, says his restaurant, which opened last month, features a wall with a variety of verses from the Bible. “God is the center of our lives,” a plaque on the Scripture wall says, “so our scripture wall is at the center of Bailey’s Pizza!” “Take time to read the scriptures others have written,” the plaque continues, “and if you want—ask your waitress for use of our markers to add your own.” During a weekend last month, Rose invited the restaurant’s patrons to bring church bulletins to the pizza shop on Sunday and receive a 10% discount. “Happy Sunday, y’all!” a July 20 post on the restaurant’s Facebook page stated. “Bring in your church bulletin and receive 10% off. We open at 11:00. Have a blessed day.” Source: Charisma News Author: Michael Brown On a regular basis, whenever there are reports of moral collapse in our country or of wars and crises worldwide, someone will say to me, "This is it! Jesus is about to return! Everything is coming down!" Of course, according to one system of interpretation, that could be true and the Lord could return within the next few moments or years. The problem I have is that I've heard Jesus is coming back any moment for more than 40 years. Could it be that we have a wrong mentality about the end of the age? Could it be that we're missing something very important? Officials privy to the U.N. discussions have explained to WND it’s “a tricky situation,” because the Central American immigrants are not part of any group the U.N. has designated as victims of political or religious persecution. A UNHCR official confirmed Monday to WND via email that a 10-nation meeting in Nicaragua of ministers of the interior from the U.S., Mexico and various Central American countries was held Thursday and Friday. The ministers, according to preliminary reports obtained by WND, concluded the Central American illegal aliens are “refugees” deserving international protection under the auspices of the U.N. as they seek asylum in the U.S. The ministers cited the U.N.’s 30-year-old declaration on the rights of refugees. French full veil ban upheld by European Court of Human Rights The European Court of Human Rights has upheld a ban in France on wearing the Muslim full-face veil - the niqab. French law says nobody can wear in a public space clothing intended to conceal the face. The penalty for doing so can be a 150-euro fine (£120; $205). A case was brought by a 24-year-old French woman, who argued that the ban on wearing the veil in public violated her freedom of religion and expression. Bridget Kendall reports. |
